Yiannis Taverna – Edmonton, Alberta

Last weekend we went for a great meal at Yiannis Taverna in Edmonton.  It was a celebration for our family with it being my mother-in-law’s birthday and was a chance for the family to be together before Christmas!

My Mother-in-law loves Greek food so we always try to have that for her on her birthday.  Yiannis Taverna had recently been renovated so I was excited to see what they had done with the place and they did not disappoint! The renovations that they have done have made the restaurant very inviting and modern looking! There is a lot of space there, with plenty of room for people to have their Christmas Parties, Birthdays and other celebrations!

Now for the food! We all had ordered different plates and happy to say that everyone was very happy with their food! My Hubs ordered the Rack of Lamb and I think I have to say that that was the winning plate of the night! Great flavour and cooked perfectly!

All in all in it was a great evening with music, food, laughter and great time spent with our family! If you are in the Edmonton area check out this great restaurant!

Banana Chocolate Chip Protein Muffins

Banana Chocolate Chip Protein Muffin

 

I am so happy with how these turned out! These are great for a quick breakfast with a smoothie or for a quick snack!

What you will need:

2 Eggs
2 Ripe Bananas
1/2 cup of Honey (Next time I might try to use a little bit less and see if it makes a big difference taste wise)
1/4 cup of Almond Milk
1 tsp of Vanilla
1.5 tsp of Baking Powder
1 tsp of Baking Soda
1/2 cup of Organic Dark Chocolate Chips
1 cup of Gluten Free All Purpose Flour (I have the Cloud 9 Brand)
Coconut Oil
2 scoops of Arbonne Vanilla Protein Powder

Preheat your oven to 350F, grease your Muffin Pan with the Coconut Oil and set aside.

Take a large bowl and add remaining ingredients and mix well.  Then spoon evenly into your muffin tin.  Mine made enough for 12 muffins.

Put your muffins in the oven, mine took roughly 20 minutes but just keep an eye on them and change the time accordingly.

The Marc!

Over the weekend we went to Edmonton to pick up my Nephew and Niece who will be staying with me and the Hubs for the Summer! The play Wicked was also playing that weekend so we decided to make a night of it with the family!

My sister-in-law chose the restaurant for dinner and couldn’t have found a better place! The Marc is a great French restaurant with great food and great service!

Now onto the food!

My Hubs and I decided to try out the Steak Tartar.  I have never had this dish before and I thought that it was delicious! It came with Bread and Cornichons, I honestly could have eaten the whole thing without the bread! But the whole dish was great! For our mains I had the Lamb and Hubs had the Pork Shoulder Chop! The lamb chops were so good and cooked perfectly! They were served with peas and couscous!

The next time you are in Edmonton, check out this restaurant! You won’t be disappointed!

Beef Short Ribs…For the First Time

I have always wanted to try making Beef Short Ribs.  Every time I go to a restaurant and they are featured on the menu, that is typically what I would order.  The same with Crab Cakes…but that’s a whole other conversation!

So I was at the Butcher Shop (which is conveniently located beside my office) and they had packages of Beef Short Ribs as a special. They don’t have them a lot so I grabbed the opportunity to get them and try to make them!

I looked around online and went through  a couple of recipes, but either I din’t have everything needed or was going to take too much time. So I just did my own thing and they turned out AWESOME!

What you need:

– Beef Short Ribs
– Black Pepper
– Kosher Salt
– Coconut Oil
– Thyme
– White Onion
– Cherry Tomatoes
– Bottle of Red Wine

First things first get your oven on! I have a great Slow Cooker option on my oven so I put mine on the high setting.  Grab a pan or pot, something with a good lid and that is also safe to put in the oven.  I have an amazing pan from Epicure called the Everything Pan…the name is perfect because it is literally perfect for everything.  I use it all the time. Get in a good amount of Coconut Oil and get it to a really good high heat.  You want to now season the meat.  Always try to make sure that your meat is at room temperature.  I love fresh ground pepper so I use a little bit more and then put a good amount of kosher salt on them as well.  Once the pan is at a good heat you want to sear the meat on all sides so that it has a good crust on the outside.  Remove the beef from the pan and reduce the heat.  Put in the chopped Onion and I also throw in some Garlic.  Let the Onions cook for a little bit so that they soften up a bit.  Once that is ready, remove it from the heat and put the beef back in the pan.  Pour in your WHOLE bottle of wine.  Which reminds me, Julia Child said that when cooking with wine, if you wouldn’t drink it then you shouldn’t cook with it.  That has always stuck with me, so don’t be cheap and use a good one! Throw in a good handful of Thyme, the Cherry Tomatoes, put the lid on, throw it in the oven and WALK Away!

Mine stayed in the oven for about 6-7 hours and when I took them out, the meat just fell right off the bone. THEY were awesome! These would be really good served with garlic mashed potatoes or for an alternative have them on mashed cauliflower (my favourite!).

Birthday Weekend BBQ

I believe that the best meals are those that are prepared by everyone and that was exactly how my long weekend went. We had a busy household with my Mother-In-Law, Mrs. Gartner, My Hubs Brother, Mr. Gartner and his girlfriend, Ms. MacLachlan, My Hubs Twin Sister, Ms. Gartner and her boyfriend, Mr. Hasenuik! It was great to have everyone together for an early birthday celebration for my Hubs and his sister.

Over the weekend we cooked, laughed, had a few cocktails and really spent a lot of much needed time visiting. It was great!

One of the best dinners we had was Beer Can Chicken, Corn on the Cob and a delicious Shredded Kale salad that Ms. MacLachlan made. The Shredded Kale salad was so awesome and I know I will be making it again in the future. Check out the recipe here at JustaTaste!

Koutouki Taverna

This weekend the Gartner family gathered together to celebrate my mother in-laws 60th birthday! It was a great weekend filled with laughter, some wine and great food! My mother in-law is a huge fan of Greek food so we decided to check out Koutouki Taverna for her birthday dinner!

What a great restaurant! When we first walked into the restaurant we were hit by an overwhelming delicious smell of garlic (which instantly made me happy!). On Friday and Saturday nights the restaurant is filled with music, belly dancers and don’t be surprised if you get picked up to dance around the restaurant and enjoy your complimentary shot of Ouzo!

We sampled a little bit of everything for appies including grilled calamari, dolmades, mussels and shrimp. All of our entrées came with Greek salad as one of the sides, so instead of bringing everyone their individual salads they served a huge bowl of Greek salad that could be served family style.

Family style has to be the best, I just love how it just pulls everyone in to the dinner and creates conversations! For my entrée I had the Arni Kleftico (slow roasted lamb), it was so good and crazy tender!

Overall this restaurant was a gem to find! From the food, atmosphere and the great staff, you don’t want to miss eating there if you have a chance!
